What is the SMS Data Catalogue?

The SMS Data Catalogue supports you to solve common problems encountered by data analysts, data scientists, data stewards, and other data consumers in the domain of data analytics, and specially to understand the data.

    Data often lacks context information required to interpret it. This requires consuming parties to always consult data owners to gather insights on their datasets.

    Over the years teams gather tremendous knowledge about their data and dataset. This makes it very hard for people from outside the team to turn the team’s data into business value. New team members struggle to obtain this knowledge and knowledge may get lost with people leaving the company.

According to Gartner a data catalog is defined as:

“A data catalog maintains an inventory of data assets through the discovery, description, and organization of datasets. The catalog provides context to enable data analysts, data scientists, data stewards, and other data consumers to find and understand a relevant dataset for the purpose of extracting business value.”

The SMS Data Catalogue fulfils this definition. Its mission is to capture the essence of data and putting it at the fingertips of our users. Its aim is to become an essential tool in the daily work of data analysts and data consumers in the metals’ industry.
